Workshop

The Paralives mods worth installing first

Ranked by all-time Steam Workshop subscribers and re-checked by hand. Every entry carries a link, a named author and a verification date, because a mod list without those is just a rumour.

Short answer

Start with the camera, then the map

The most-subscribed item in the entire Paralives Workshop is not custom content. It is Sensible Camera Control, which stops the camera tilting on its own. Add Zoom out more! and Crystal Clear Map View and you have answered three of the complaints that dominate the game's negative Steam reviews before installing a single piece of furniture.

What the numbers say

Players are not subscribing for furniture

Of the ten most-subscribed Workshop items of all time, 5 are quality-of-life mods that change how the game controls or reads; the other 5 are custom content. The sixth quality-of-life mod sits at rank 14. That split is the reason this page exists — the loudest demand in the Paralives modding scene is not for more sofas, it is for the camera, the map and the zoom to behave.

It lines up with the reviews. Camera control and townie behaviour are two of the most repeated themes in the game's negative Steam reviews, and the top of the Workshop reads like a direct answer to both.

The list

Fifteen mods, each one checked

Ordered by unique subscribers as reported by Steam on 2026-07-27. 15 entries, every one opened by hand so the author, the counts and the dates below come from the item page rather than a listing.

Removes the automatic tilt and the angle limits from the camera, so it only changes angle when you tell it to.

The stock camera re-tilts itself as you pan. That single behaviour sits behind a large share of the camera complaints in the game's negative reviews, which is why this is the most-installed item in the entire Paralives Workshop.

Strips the depth-of-field blur and the colour filter out of the town map view.

The stock map is styled rather than legible — at a distance the blur makes buildings hard to tell apart. Removing it turns the map back into a navigation tool.

Adds a phone interaction for preteens and older, under Self, Use Phone, Call Parafolk, that walks the residents you pick to whatever lot you are on.

Getting other residents to show up where you want them is otherwise a matter of waiting and hoping. This is the closest the game comes to letting you stage a scene.

Shows the town's residents on the world map when you zoom out.

Without it the town reads as empty from above and you cannot tell where anyone is without visiting. It is the other half of the map legibility problem.

    Zoom out more!

Raises the camera's zoom-out limit so you can pull back further than the game normally allows.

The stock limit is tight enough that a large lot will not fit on screen, which makes building and landscaping fiddly. Its author suggests pairing it with Crystal Clear Map View.

Adds a "Customize my Para!" option to dressers, closets and mirrors, opening the character editor without typing a console command.

For the first weeks of Early Access this was the only way to change a Para's appearance after creation short of a cheat code, which is how it climbed the ranking so fast.

Partly shipped in 0.1.5 (2026-07-02). Patch 0.1.5 added free appearance editing from any mirror, plus the hospital and the pharmacy, covering everything in the Paramaker except labels, personalities and lifestages. The dresser and closet entry points are the part the patch does not cover.

Adds interactions to kitchen appliances that were previously decoration, the coffee machine among them.

A good part of the kitchen is scenery in the current build. This is the most-subscribed attempt to make the room behave the way it looks.

Rebalances how many days each life stage lasts and adds Extra Short, Longer and Extra Long durations.

Default pacing compresses childhood and adolescence into a handful of days. If you play long generational saves, this is the setting the game does not give you.

Reduces the outline drawn around character models to a fraction of its default width.

The heavy cartoon outline on Paras is a deliberate art choice and one of the most divisive ones. This dials it back without touching anything else about how they look.

Lets Paras nap on couches and benches the same way they sleep in a bed.

Small, and the kind of gap you notice hourly: an exhausted Para standing next to a sofa they cannot use. One of the few entries here re-published after the current build.

Gives each of the eleven base-game emotions its own colour in the interface and on portraits.

The stock emotion indicator looks the same whatever the mood, so reading a household means hovering over each Para in turn. Colour makes it a glance.

Adds a debug category to Build Mode holding objects that are normally hidden, along with collectibles and paintings, and makes hidden objects turn up in search.

Builders use it to place set dressing the catalogue does not expose. It comes from Zerbu, a modder with a long track record in this genre.

Adds four interactions to all indoor plants and to some outdoor ones.

Gardening is not in the current build, so houseplants sit inert. This is the community filling in for a system that has been promised but not shipped.

Adds the missing tags to low-backed dresses so bras and underwear tops stop showing through them.

A straight bug fix the community shipped first. Its author expects the studio to correct the tags officially, which makes it a good example of a mod with a deliberate shelf life.

    New Jobs

Adds eleven more careers to the game's job list.

Early Access ships with eleven, so this roughly doubles the options. Re-published after the current build, which is rarer on this list than it should be.

    Re-published for 0.1.7c

"Not re-published since 0.1.7c" means the author has not uploaded a new file since the current build shipped. It is not a verdict — plenty of small mods keep working across patches untouched. It is simply the first thing to check when one of them stops.

One of these is now partly redundant

The studio keeps absorbing popular mods into the base game. That is good news and a trap: an old mod duplicating a shipped feature is a conflict waiting to happen. Here is what has been overtaken so far.

  • Customize Para After CreationPatch 0.1.5 added free appearance editing from any mirror, plus the hospital and the pharmacy, covering everything in the Paramaker except labels, personalities and lifestages. The dresser and closet entry points are the part the patch does not cover.

Method

How this list was built, and what it costs to keep

  • The ranking comes from the Steam Workshop browse page for Paralives sorted by all-time unique subscribers, pages one to three, read on 2026-07-27.
  • Every entry was then opened individually on Steam, so the author name, profile link, subscriber count and both dates come from the item page rather than the listing.
  • Custom content was excluded on purpose. Hair, lashes and furniture sets dominate the raw ranking; this page is about mods that change how the game plays.
  • Nothing is listed without a Workshop link, a named author and a date. A mod we could not verify is a mod we left out, including some popular ones.
  • Subscriber counts are a snapshot rather than a live figure. They move daily and are here to show relative scale, not to be exact.

This list will go out of date

Mods get abandoned, patches absorb them, and the ranking reshuffles every season. Last reviewed 2026-07-27; next review due 2026-10-27. If you are reading this well past that date, check the live Workshop ranking yourself.

Common questions

Do I need mods to enjoy Paralives?
No. Everything here is optional, and the studio has already shipped several of these ideas into the base game. The camera mods are the ones most players install first, because the default camera behaviour is a genuine friction point rather than a matter of taste.
Will these mods break when the game updates?
Some will. Paralives Studio warns in its own patch notes that external plugins and mods may not be compatible with a new build right away. Check each mod's last-updated date against the current build, and if the game misbehaves after a patch, disable everything and re-enable in batches.
Are Workshop mods safe to install?
Workshop items are free by Steam's rules and moderated by Valve, and the ones listed here are asset and feature mods built with the game's own modding tools, so they do not execute custom code. Script mods, which do, are not allowed on the Workshop at all.
How do I install them?
Subscribe on Steam and the game downloads them, then enable them in the Mods menu on the title screen. Our install guide covers both the Workshop route and manual files from other hosts.
Why is Customize Para After Creation still listed if the game does that now?
Patch 0.1.5 added free appearance editing from a mirror, the hospital and the pharmacy, which covers most of what the mod was installed for. It stays listed because tens of thousands of people are still subscribed and deserve to know the base game caught up. Quietly deleting the row would be less useful than explaining it.
Where are the script mods such as Mod Organizer or Construction Tools?
Not on the Workshop. Paralives Studio does not allow script mods there, so they are hosted on Nexus Mods and load through a third-party plugin loader. Our troubleshooting page sets out what is confirmed about that route and what we have not verified.
