The short version
Meet a Para as a Stranger, build friendship with friendly socials, then switch to flirt and romance interactions until a romance track appears. Open Discuss Relationship to roll relationship cards — that is where labels like Lovers, Propose and the children talk live. Labels stack (you can be Friend and Lovers at once) and each can have levels; high levels unlock perks. Marriage needs Lovers → Propose → Betrothed → Elope; babies need Lovers plus the ask-to-have-children card.
- Labels stack — friendship does not disappear when romance starts
- Flirt and romance socials push the romance track; Discuss Relationship rolls the big cards
- Lovers is the EA gate for Propose, Try for Baby and the children talk
- Set jealousy per Para in Paramaker for open or poly households
Relationship labels & tiers
Paralives uses named labels instead of one progress bar — 33 of them across five tracks, plus two hidden trackers the interface never lists. Labels stack, level independently and can be one-sided: a Para can be your Friend, Coworker and Enemy at the same time. The full Early Access catalog below comes from game-file data cross-checked with the community wiki.
| Label | Max level | Typical unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Social — 5 labels | ||
| Stranger | — | Default for Paras you haven't met; interacting upgrades it into Acquaintance. |
| Acquaintance | 10 | Auto-upgrade from Stranger; casual chats build it toward Friend. |
| Friend | 100 | Unlocks personal Together Cards, asking about each other's day and deeper conversations; high levels add inside jokes. |
| Best Friend Forever | — | Granted by the special "Promise to Stay Friends Forever" Together Card — a permanent commitment with unique interactions. |
| Enemy | — | Built through insults, betrayals and red cards; coexists with positive labels and unlocks hostile interactions. |
| Romantic — 12 labels | ||
| Romantic Interest | 20 | The early romance track; flirt success grows with its level, and it can be completely one-sided. |
| Secret Crush | 10 | One-sided attraction; non-mutual crushes can unlock gestures like anonymous love letters. |
| Denied Crush | 10 | Created when a crush is turned down. |
| Lover | 20 | Committed romance stage; unlocks the Propose card and the ask-to-have-children card. |
| Kissing PartnersHidden | 1 | Hidden system tracker recording kissing history — never shown in the normal label list. |
| Intimacy PartnersHidden | 1 | Hidden tracker behind Try for Baby; reached through repeated intimacy or the future-children Together Card. |
| Betrothed | — | The engagement label after a successful Propose — the couple can now Elope. |
| Prospective Co-Parent | 1 | Activates after a positive "have children together" conversation card. |
| Spouse | — | Married status after eloping; Early Access has no wedding ceremony. |
| Ex-Lover | 1 | Created by breaking up; leftover romance labels once blocked new relationships until 0.1.4 fixed it. |
| Non-Exclusive Partner | — | One side of the exclusivity choice at Lover stage — romance with others carries no jealousy penalty. |
| Exclusive Partner | — | The other side of the exclusivity choice; patch notes confirm the in-game "Exclusive Lovers" naming. |
| Family — 4 labels | ||
| Household Member | 20 | Auto-assigned to everyone living in the same household. |
| Parent | 20 | Set in the Paramaker or formed through birth and adoption; assigning one side auto-assigns Child on the other. |
| Child | 20 | The mirror of Parent — an asymmetrical pairing the game keeps in sync automatically. |
| Sibling | 20 | Symmetrical family tie; family labels block romantic Together Cards between the pair. |
| Buddy — 8 labels | ||
| Dance Buddy | 50 | Formed by practicing Dance together; higher buddy levels boost skill XP for both Paras. |
| Exercise Buddy | 50 | Formed by working out together; one of the two buddy labels the wiki confirms obtainable. |
| Guitar Buddy | 50 | Formed by practicing Guitar together; buddy levels multiply shared skill XP. |
| Piano Buddy | 50 | Formed by practicing Piano together; the wiki currently lists it as not obtainable in live play. |
| Programming Buddy | 50 | Formed by practicing Programming together; same obtainability caveat as the other skill buddies. |
| Graphic Design Buddy | 50 | Formed by practicing Graphic Design together; capped at level 50 in game files. |
| Cooking Buddy | 50 | Formed by cooking together; dev examples promised strong bonuses for high-level Cooking Buddies. |
| Baking Buddy | — | Formed by baking together — the only buddy label with no documented level cap. |
| Contextual — 4 labels | ||
| Coworker | 20 | Auto-assigned at a shared workplace; unlocks office gossip, promotion congratulations and work complaints. |
| Classmate | 20 | Auto-assigned at the same school; teens get it with every teenager in Melino. |
| Creep | — | Assigned after persistent unwanted advances; lowers social success and triggers avoidance — can decay with better behavior. |
| Boss | — | Workplace hierarchy tracker affecting career interactions. |
Source conflicts kept visible: the Stranger max level appears as 2 in game files but 5 on the wiki, and the wiki marks six of the eight buddy labels as not currently obtainable while game files cap them at level 50. UI-shown levels may differ. Sources: wikily.gg game-file extraction and paralives.wiki.gg Relationship labels (CC BY-SA).

How to Build Romance in Paralives
- 1
Confirm ages and Paramaker settings
Romance socials require Young Adult or older for full marriage and baby paths; teens can flirt and date other teens but cannot run the adult Propose flow. In Paramaker, set gender, orientation and pregnancy options before the Para joins a household — fertility gates Try for Baby later. For polyamory, set jealousy per Para under Advanced Personality (Never get jealous lets a partner tolerate other romances). See the identity guide for pronouns and jealousy detail.

- 2
Build friendship first (optional but common)
Most pairs start as Stranger or Acquaintance. Use friendly socials — chat, compliment, shared activities — until Friend appears on the relationship panel. Friendship labels can level up over a lifetime and coexist with romance; your best friend can also become your partner without losing the Friend label.

- 3
Flirt and use romance-tagged socials
Switch to flirt, romance compliment and date-style interactions. Keep both Paras in a decent mood — exhausted or furious Paras stall relationship gains. Social perks like Good at romantic relationships raise flirt success and influence which Together Cards roll. Negative arguments can slow the track; save before risky cards if you are on a challenge run.

- 4
Open Discuss Relationship for label cards
Discuss Relationship (and similar relationship-stack options) is where major labels advance. Cards can propose changing the relationship state, ask about children, or move toward engagement. Read the percentage on risky cards — Propose can fail and hurt the bond. When the panel shows Lovers, deeper family and marriage cards start appearing.

- 5
Hit Lovers, then pick your branch
Lovers is the Early Access gate most family content references. From here you can run the Propose → Betrothed → Elope marriage chain, play the ask-to-have-children card and Try for Baby on a bed, or stay dating without either. Marriage and pregnancy each have dedicated guides with step-by-step checklists.

- 6
Manage multiple bonds and jealousy
Paras can hold several relationship labels at once across different people. Jealousy is per Para: a partner set to react to kissing will fight over affairs unless you chose Never get jealous. NPC Paras do not build relationships autonomously in current EA — you drive every romance. Use showcharacterrelationships from the cheat console to dump all labels when debugging.

Common relationship mistakes
These four issues stall romance more often than missing a hidden menu.
Staying on friendly chat only
Friendship alone never unlocks Propose or Try for Baby. You need flirt and romance interactions until the romance track and Lovers label appear.
Ignoring mood and schedules
Paras mid-shift, asleep or miserable gain little relationship progress. Free both schedules, fix needs, and try an Overjoyed mood boost before big cards.
Expecting one bar to flip from Friend to Spouse
Labels stack and level independently. You advance through Discuss Relationship cards — there is no single slider that jumps straight to marriage.
Poly households with default jealousy
Default jealousy reacts to kissing or any touch. Set Never get jealous on Paras who should accept multiple partners before you start a second romance.
The five relationship tracks
Game-file data for the Early Access build lists 33 relationship labels across five tracks — Social, Romantic, Family, Buddy and Contextual — plus two hidden tracker labels the game uses internally. Labels stack and level independently: one pair can be Friend, Lover, Coworker and Enemy at the same time, and a label can be one-sided (a Secret Crush nobody returns). NPCs do not build relationships autonomously in the current EA build — you drive every bond.
Social — 5 labels
Stranger, Acquaintance, Friend, Best Friend Forever and Enemy. The default track every pair starts on; high Friend levels unlock personal Together Cards and inside jokes.
Romantic — 12 labels
From Secret Crush and Romantic Interest through Lover, Betrothed (engaged) and Spouse, plus Ex-Lover, Denied Crush, Exclusive and Non-Exclusive Partner, Prospective Co-Parent and two hidden trackers. The largest track.
Family — 4 labels
Household Member, Parent, Child and Sibling. Set in the Paramaker or formed through birth, adoption and moving in. Family labels block romantic interactions.
Buddy — 8 labels
Dance, Exercise, Guitar, Piano, Programming, Graphic Design, Cooking and Baking Buddy — formed by practicing a skill together and boosting its XP gains.
Contextual — 4 labels
Coworker, Classmate, Boss and Creep — assigned automatically by workplaces, schools and persistent unwanted advances rather than card choices.
Hidden trackers — 2 labels
Kissing Partners and Intimacy Partners are invisible system labels that gate physical intimacy; Intimacy Partners lvl 2 is the hidden requirement for Try for Baby.
Source conflict: the counts above come from game-file data (wikily.gg, EA build 1). The official wiki documents the same system through older dev-era groupings (family ties, friendship, romantic, professional, enemies, activities in common) from a 2023 Paratreon post — treat the per-track numbers as game-file data, not an official list.
Together Cards, explained
Together Cards are the engine behind every relationship change. After roughly 20 minutes of progress on the Together Bar next to the active Para's portrait, an icon offers a choice of 3 cards. Cards are not conversation options — they are forks with consequences, rolled from context: current activity, emotions, recent memories, who is present and where you are.
- Colors signal tone: white (neutral), green (friendship), pink (romance), dark blue (skills and hobbies), red (mean), dark red (discomfort). Strong emotions make colored variants more likely — a white Compliment outfit can turn into an ironic red one.
- Many cards show a success chance % before you commit — hover the target icon for the full breakdown. Failed cards can leave a Para Embarrassed and lower the next attempt.
- Non-active Paras can initiate cards too — a surprise job offer or a romantic gesture appears on the active Para's profile.
- The Storyteller you picked for the save is what offers to add a relationship label or level it up after repeated interactions of the same type.
- Nightly Story Cards include a Social pack of cards that impact relationships — and the whole system is moddable via Steam Workshop.
Friendship chain & enemies
The Social track climbs Stranger → Acquaintance → Friend and tops out at Best Friend Forever — a permanent commitment unlocked only by the special Promise to Stay Friends Forever Together Card (reported between Teen friends). Enemy is the track's other branch: built through insults and betrayals, it unlocks hostile interactions and — unusually — coexists with positive labels, so a pair can be Friend and Enemy at once.

Family relationships
Family works through labels, not a family tree — trees were deliberately left out of the EA launch and are planned for a later update. Parent, Child and Sibling block romantic interactions entirely, so no romance cards appear between family members.
- Parent/Child is asymmetrical — assigning one side auto-assigns the other; Sibling is symmetrical, and everyone in the household gets Household Member.
- Set family at creation with the Paramaker's edit-relationships option, or fix ties later with the editcharacter cheat → three-dots menu → add a relationship label (the top community question for Workshop households).
- Children automatically receive Parent/Child and Household Member labels, and need an older guardian in the household — Teenager is the earliest lifestage that can live alone.
Contextual labels: work, school & Creep
Coworker, Classmate and Boss are assigned automatically by shared workplaces and schools — teens get Classmate with every teenager in Melino — and unlock their own small interactions, from office gossip to homework copying. The fourth label is Creep: persistent unwanted romantic or social advances assign it, it lowers social success and makes others avoid the Para, and it decays over time with better behavior.
Buddy labels & skill XP
Eight Buddy labels — one per skill: Dance, Exercise, Guitar, Piano, Programming, Graphic Design, Cooking and Baking — form when two Paras practice together. Seven cap at lvl 50 (Baking Buddy is uncapped), and higher buddy levels increase the skill XP both Paras gain when practicing together, making a regular practice partner the fastest training strategy.
Obtainability conflict: the official wiki marks only Exercise and Guitar Buddy as obtainable and the other six as "not currently obtainable", while game-file data lists all eight with level caps. Possibly shipped but not yet triggerable.
Breakups, exes & moving on
Breaking up creates the Ex-Lover label; rejecting a one-sided crush creates Denied Crush. Patch 0.1.4 fixed Paras wrongly keeping the Exclusive Lovers label after a breakup, but leftover labels can still block Try for Baby or becoming Exclusive — the console command Removerelationship ParaA:ParaB wipes a pair's history as a workaround.
There is no wedding event in Early Access: marriage is the Elope option under Discuss Relationship (a special yellow card) with a quick rings-and-vows sequence in place. Formal weddings are on the official roadmap as social events — see the roadmap page for what is planned, and the marriage guide for the full Elope flow.
Try for Baby & adoption
Try for Baby is gated behind the hidden Intimacy Partners lvl 2 label — reached through repeated intimacy or the Lovers card asking about having children together, which also grants the Future Co-Parents label. Both Paras must be Young Adult or older with matching pregnancy settings, then select both in a group and click a bed.
Adoption is the second route: visit the Hospital, choose Adopt baby, and the Para returns two hours later with a randomized, nameable baby — free, with the 8-Paras household cap as the only limit.
Relationship patch history
Every relationship-relevant change since the Early Access launch, from the Steam news hub and paralives.com/news.
0.1.3 — Teen romance
Teenagers can now flirt and be in romantic relationships with other teenagers — the first Live Mode feature patch.
0.1.4 — Breakup label fix
Parafolks no longer keep the Exclusive Lovers label after breaking up.
0.1.5 — Happy Marriage goal fix
Propose and Elope now properly complete the Happy Marriage life goal. Still listed as a known issue: some Paras get jealous when kissing their own partner.
0.1.6 — Ask if Single & self-proposal fixes
Ask if Single no longer counts Romantic Interest as a relationship, and Paras can no longer propose to themselves in Together Cards.
Not yet verified
No source documents a divorce interaction distinct from breaking up — breakup mechanics appear to cover married couples. A Hug interaction is not on any documented interaction list. Whether labels can be downgraded is unclear as of mid-2026. Other open items: Stranger's max level (game files say 2, the wiki says 5), whether Best Friend Forever is teen-only, and whether any dev-described combo labels (e.g. Coworker + Creative Buddy → Productive Duo) are actually obtainable.
Relationship FAQ
Straight answers for the romance searches that land here.
- Can you romance in Paralives?
- Yes. Adult Paras flirt and build romance labels through live-mode socials and Discuss Relationship cards. Same-sex couples use the same flow; Paramaker settings do not block romance.
- What are Paralives relationship levels?
- They are leveled labels (Friend lvl5, Lovers lvl1, etc.) rather than one meter. Interacting through Together Cards levels a label up; high levels unlock relationship perks. Exact level caps per label are not officially published for EA.
- How do you flirt in Paralives?
- Select a Para, click another, and pick flirt or romance-tagged socials from the pie menu. Success depends on mood, existing labels and social perks. Keep interacting until romance labels appear on the relationship panel.
- What does Discuss Relationship do?
- It opens the relationship card stack where major state changes roll — defining the relationship, asking about children, Propose, Elope Together and similar milestones. It is separate from small talk or generic friendly chats.
- What is the difference between Friend and Lovers?
- Friend is the friendship track; Lovers is the committed romance label that gates Propose, the children talk and Try for Baby in Early Access. You can hold both labels with the same Para at once.
- Can teens date in Paralives?
- Yes — patch notes confirm teens can flirt and be in relationships with other teens. The full Propose, elope and Try for Baby flows require Young Adult or older.
- Are there relationship cheats?
- showcharacterrelationships prints every label for the selected Para (read-only, useful for bug reports). There is no published cheat to force Lovers instantly — use social play or check the full cheats hub for related debug commands.
- Can you have multiple romantic partners?
- The base game allows multiple relationships; jealousy reactions are controlled per Para in Paramaker. Set Never get jealous on partners who should accept polyamory, then build each bond through the normal flirt and Discuss Relationship flow.
- How many relationship labels are there in Paralives?
- Game-file data for the EA build lists 33 labels across five tracks — Social (5), Romantic (12), Family (4), Buddy (8) and Contextual (4) — plus two hidden trackers, Kissing Partners and Intimacy Partners. The official wiki groups the same system into older dev-era categories, so totals differ by source.
- Why is there no option to become a couple?
- High levels alone do not unlock it. The Ask to be in a relationship Together Card must roll — players report Romantic Interest lvl 24 with no couple option until the card appeared. Keep romance interactions going and watch the Together Bar.
- Can you have a wedding in Paralives?
- Not in Early Access. Marriage is the Elope option under Discuss Relationship — a quick vows-and-rings sequence, no event. Formal weddings as social events are on the official roadmap with no version attached.
- How do I change family relationships after creating a household?
- Open the console, run editcharacter to reopen the Paramaker, then use the three-dots menu on the Para to add relationship labels — the standard fix for Workshop households and kids missing Parent labels.
- What is the Creep label?
- Creep is a Contextual label assigned after persistent unwanted romantic or social advances. It reduces social success rates and makes other Paras avoid the Para, but it decays over time with improved behavior.
