The short version
Paralives has no pond or water tool as of 0.1.8b — Lakes & ponds sit on the official Early Access roadmap as a "basic lake and pond tool" with no date. Builders get water today three ways: a placeable water-surface object, a free Town Water item, or a no-mod glass pane sunk into a dug basin. Dig the hole with the terrain tools, drop a surface in, then sell the shoreline with soil, rocks, plants and ducks.
- No water tool yet — Lakes & ponds are on the official Early Access plan, so this page only uses tricks that work today
- Three water routes: a stretchable water object, the free Town Water item, or a P70 accent window laid flat as a no-mod surface
- Terrain Height Lower digs the basin; Smooth softens the banks; Terrain Paint adds soil and grass rings
- Exactly one duck item ships and it is a toy — duplicate it for a flock
- Rocks, reeds and a deck are what make a hole read as a pond
- This page split from our pool guide: that page owns swimming-pool builds, this one owns garden water
The hole
Shape the basin with the terrain tools
Every pond starts as a hole. The terrain lower tool draws soft-edged basins, the smooth brush keeps the banks natural, and depth is what makes the water read dark later.
- 1
Trace the pond with the terrain lower tool
Panda Builds opens his pond the same way you sketch on paper: with the terrain tool set to lower, he draws the pond's outline on the lawn next to the terrace. Keep the shape lopsided — perfect circles read as fountains, wobbly kidneys read as garden ponds.

The sketch phase: a lopsided outline beats a perfect circle.Watch at 7:00 - 2
Lower the ground in rings, deepest last
AmityAlcove digs her big pond in passes: a wide shallow ring first, then narrower and deeper rings inside it. Working in rings keeps the banks sloped instead of cliffed, which matters later when you paint the shoreline.

Ring passes: shallow outside, deepest at the heart.Watch at 0:30 - 3
Soften everything with the smooth brush
Aanlix runs the smooth brush around the rim before any decorating — it irons out the terraced rings into one gentle slope. Skip this and your soil paint later will band across every terrace line.

Smooth now, or the banks will band later.Watch at 4:50 - 4
Go deeper than looks right
Depth is free drama. Panda's finished pond sits well below the lawn, and that drop is what makes the surface read as dark water from every camera angle. Shallow basins stay shiny no matter what you put in them.

The surface
Lay the water — three routes, zero tools
This is the step Paralives makes you improvise. There is no water tool, so builders place a surface object instead: a stretchable "water" item, or — with no mods at all — a large accent window laid flat and sunk into the basin.
- 5
Route 1 — stretch a "water" catalogue object (mod)
With a debug-item unlock mod installed, Panda searches the catalogue for "water", drops the blue surface into his basin and stretches it edge to edge with the resize handles. Note the disclosure: that object is not in the vanilla catalogue — it only appears with the mod, so treat this as the mod route and keep reading for the no-mod one.

Search, place, stretch — but only with the unlock mod.Watch at 7:18 - 6
Route 2 — the P70 accent window (no mods)
Aanlix fakes his whole water surface with base-game parts: one Chani accent window — P70 in the window catalogue — chosen because the glass is big, flat and tinted. Nothing here needs a mod; you are buying an ordinary window and using it sideways.

The whole trick is one P70 window.Watch at 4:14 - 7
Lay it flat and sink it into the basin
Rotate the window flat, stretch it past the banks, then lower it into the hole with the vertical handle until it sits just under the rim. Sunk glass picks up the dark basin underneath and reads as water; glass sitting on the lawn reads as a table.

Paint a soil ring on the banks
Switch to Terrain Paint Mode and brush brown soil around the waterline. The ring hides the seam between glass and lawn and gives the pond the muddy margin every real pond has. Aanlix paints soil before grass so the dark ring stays visible.

Soil first — the grass ring goes on top of it.Watch at 5:11
The shoreline
Landscape the banks so it reads as water
The surface alone looks like a blue sheet. Rocks at the waterline, soil and grass rings, and bushes breaking the outline are what turn a hole into a pond.
- 9
Ring the waterline with rocks
AmityAlcove builds her pond edge entirely from the landscaping rocks: big boulders at the corners, smaller stones between, placed one by one so no two neighbours match. The irregular rhythm is the whole trick — a uniform rock ring looks like a border, not a shore.

Boulders and pebbles, never in pairs.Watch at 3:00 - 10
Tuck stones into the water itself
Panda goes the other way — his stones sit slightly inside the surface, half-drowned. Water overlapping rock is the oldest pond photo trick there is, and in Paralives it sells the surface better than any texture setting.

Half-drowned stones beat dry edging.Watch at 7:32 - 11
Break the outline with bushes and flowers
Both builders soften their banks the same way: white hydrangeas and rose bushes planted so the pond's rim disappears under green at two or three points. A shoreline you can see all the way around looks drawn on.

Let the plants eat the outline in places.Watch at 7:24 - 12
Finish with a grass and wildflower ring
Aanlix's last pass is the terrain paint catalogue's tall grass and wildflower swatches, brushed just outside the soil ring. It feathers the pond into the lawn and hides any hard edge your smooth brush missed.

The reason
Give the pond a purpose
Ducks, a deck, a house at pond grade — the finishing moves from two different builders that make the pond the best part of the lot.
- 13
One duck exists — duplicate the flock
Panda went looking for pond wildlife and found exactly one duck item in the catalogue — a toy. His fix, and AmityAlcove's: copy the duck a few times so a flotilla drifts on the water. There are no fish, frogs or swans to be had; the pond stays a decor feature.

The catalogue's only waterfowl, by popular demand.Watch at 7:40 - 14
Build a deck out over the water
AmityAlcove runs her wooden deck straight over the pond on posts, with railings and potted plants, so the whole back of the house faces the water. The deck also solves a practical problem: it gives Paras a legal place to stand near water that they cannot enter.

Deck over pond: the view and the footpath in one.Watch at 6:00 - 15
Or sink the house to pond grade
Her boldest move: the house's base sits down inside the dug basin, so the pond laps at the foundation and the deck bridges up to lawn level. Building at pond grade is just the terrain trick from steps 1–3 with a floor plan on top.

House at pond grade — the deck becomes the shore.Watch at 1:00 - 16
Step back and check the water reads
The last test costs nothing: pull the camera up. Dark surface, broken outline, rocks at the margin, and something alive on the water — when all four hold from above, the pond holds from everywhere.

Dark, broken-edged, inhabited: it reads.Watch at 27:00
Three waters, one pond
The mod route (Panda Builds): fastest and the most controllable — a real stretchable surface with a search bar entry. The cost is honesty in your description: the object ships through a debug-item unlock mod, so the pond is only reproducible for players who install it.
The no-mod route (Aanlix): one P70 Chani accent window laid flat and sunk. It costs nothing, survives any save, and the tinted glass genuinely reads as water from build-mode heights — but it is still a rigid sheet, so keep it below the rim and let rocks do the talking.
The free route: the Town Water object our pool guide documents — placed through the toggleedittown console route at no cost. Whichever surface you pick, the basin, banks and ducks in this guide stay identical; only step 5 to 7 changes.
Pond build FAQ
- Does Paralives have ponds or a water tool?
- Not as of 0.1.8b. There is no pond or water tool in build mode, and the wiki's List of planned features puts "Lakes & ponds" under the terrain tools, citing the official roadmap's "basic lake and pond tool" entry — with no release date. Everything in this guide works in today's game without waiting.
- Can Paras swim in a pond?
- No source shows swimming in the game yet — Swimming is on the official Early Access plan, and our pool guide tracks that separately. Treat pond water as decoration: we have no evidence Paras interact with the fake surfaces at all, so do not count on wading, fishing or skating.
- Pond or pool — which page do I want?
- Both are fake water, but the intents split cleanly: our pool guide covers swimming-pool shapes — rectangles, ladders, poolside patios — while this page covers garden water: natural basins, rock banks, ducks and decks. If your reference photo has a ladder, go to the pool guide; if it has reeds, stay here.
- How do you make a waterfall in Paralives?
- There is no documented waterfall object or flowing-water effect as of 0.1.8b. Builders approximate the look by dropping the terrain in steps and running the same water surface or glass pane down the slope. The result is static — no source documents any animated flow.
- Is the duck a real animal?
- No. The catalogue contains exactly one duck item and, as Panda Builds puts it, "it was more like a toy". There are no pond animals, fish or feeding mechanics documented anywhere official — the floating-duck flotilla is pure set dressing, which is also why it works so well.
- Which water route should I choose?
- Pick by save, not by looks. Shareable builds and no-mod purists: the P70 window pane. Already using the debug unlock mod: the searchable water object stretches fastest. Zero cost and zero mods with cheat tolerance: the Town Water item from our pool guide. The basin and shoreline in this guide are identical for all three.
