Best settings
Settings that hold a stable 40 fps
Apply these in order — the first two recover the most GPU headroom. They mirror the desktop low-FPS checklist, tuned for the Deck's 1280×800 screen.
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow distance | Medium | The single biggest GPU win — high shadows halve the framerate in the Mountain district. |
| Real-time reflections | Off | Barely visible at 800p; recovers a large slice of frame time. |
| Framerate cap | 40 fps | Set the Deck refresh to 40 Hz, or run CAPFPS 40 in the console. Steadier than an uncapped 45–55. |
| Resolution scale | 90% | Frees ~15–20% headroom with minimal visible loss on the 7-inch screen. |
| VSync | On | Pairs with the 40 Hz cap to remove tearing during camera pans. |
| Lighting & prop mods | Disable | Workshop mods that touch lighting are the most common stutter source on Deck. |
Controls
How Paralives controls on the Deck
There is no native gamepad UI yet, so the game plays like a desktop title. Use the right trackpad as a mouse with R2 to click — the default community layout 'Paralives Cozy Trackpad' maps this already. Build mode's continuous sliders work surprisingly well on trackpads. For console cheats, hold Steam+X to raise the on-screen keyboard, then type the command as usual.
Known issues
Current Steam Deck issues we are tracking
- Small text in Paramaker side panels at 1280×800 — zoom with the magnifier (Steam+L1) until a UI scale slider ships.
- Districts hitch for a beat when crossing boundaries, same as desktop — the 40 fps cap makes it far less visible.
- First launch after each patch recompiles shaders for several minutes; let it finish once and it will not repeat.
- The console shortcut Ctrl+F1 needs the on-screen keyboard or a custom button chord — bind it in the controller layout if you cheat often.
Patch watch
Re-verified on every patch
Steam Deck behaviour can change with any update, so this page is re-checked after each Paralives patch and the 'last verified' stamp above is bumped. If a patch lands and something here breaks first, the patch notes page is the fastest way to see what changed.
Patch notesParalives Steam Deck FAQ
- Does Paralives run on Steam Deck?
- It runs, but Valve rates it Unsupported. Through Proton it is playable at a stable 40 fps with medium shadows, reflections off and a 40 Hz refresh cap — that is our own testing, not a Valve rating. The official Unsupported badge cites graphics performance; the desktop-first UI and keyboard-dependent console are the other rough edges.
- Is Paralives Steam Deck Verified?
- No. Valve has tested it and landed on Unsupported — the lowest of the four Deck ratings — because of graphics performance. It is not 'pending': the badge is already on the store page. Note that SteamOS on a desktop is rated Playable separately, so the limitation is the handheld's performance envelope, not Proton compatibility.
- What are the best Paralives settings for Steam Deck?
- Shadow distance medium, real-time reflections off, 40 fps cap (40 Hz refresh), resolution scale 90%, VSync on, and lighting mods disabled. That combination holds a stable 40 fps across all four Melino districts.
- Can you use cheats on Steam Deck?
- Yes. Hold Steam+X to open the on-screen keyboard, open the console (Ctrl+F1 — bind it to a back button if you cheat often) and type any command. All 100+ codes work identically and stay achievement-safe.
- How is battery life when playing Paralives on Deck?
- With the 40 fps cap and 90% resolution scale, expect roughly 2 to 2.5 hours on an LCD Deck and a bit more on OLED. Uncapped framerate cuts that by nearly half for little visible gain.
- Will Paralives get official Steam Deck support?
- Controller support and UI scaling appear in community requests frequently, but there is no dated commitment on the official roadmap. We track every announcement on the roadmap page and update this verdict when anything changes.
