TL;DR — babies in one paragraph
Build two adult Paras' relationship to the Lovers tier and pick the 'ask to have children together' card, then select both Paras at once and choose 'Try for Baby' on a bed. A pop-up confirms the pregnancy; you can also use the pregnancy test in the bathroom to check. The pregnancy runs three stages over about three in-game days, then labour triggers the birth at home. The newborn joins the household and ages up through the child life stages. Want to skip the wait? Couples who can't conceive (or single Paras) can adopt at the hospital or pharmacy instead.
- Romance relationship unlocks 'Try for Baby' on the bed
- Pregnancy = 3 visible stages over ~3 in-game days
- Adopt at the hospital or pharmacy in town — no pregnancy needed
- Save before labour — births are a good auto-backup point
How to Have a Baby in Paralives
- 1
Build the relationship to the romance tier
Babies need two adult Paras with a romantic relationship, not just friendship. For a natural pregnancy, set one Para to 'can get pregnant' and the other to 'can get others pregnant' in Paramaker's Advanced Personality options (the three dots by the gender setting) — this can't be changed once they're living in a household. Build the relationship up to the Lovers label, then pick the 'ask if they want to have children together' card from the 'discuss state of relationship' stack. After that, the couple can try for a baby any time.
- 2
Select both Paras and choose 'Try for Baby'
Select both Paras at once — drag a selection box around them, or hold Shift and click both portraits if they live together — then click a bed and pick 'Try for Baby'. This is the step most players miss: with only one Para selected, the option never appears. Both Paras walk to the bed and the interaction plays out; conception isn't guaranteed on the first try.
- 3
Confirm with the pregnancy test (optional)
Not sure it worked? Send the Para to a bathroom toilet and use the 'Take pregnancy test' interaction. A positive result confirms the pregnancy and starts the on-screen stage tracking. This mirrors the real flow players use to double-check before committing to a nursery build.
- 4
Manage the three pregnancy stages
The pregnancy advances through three visible stages over roughly three in-game days, with the Para's appearance changing each stage. Keep needs topped up — a stressed or exhausted pregnant Para is more likely to have a rough labour. Use this window to build or buy a crib and baby-proof the home.
- 5
Give birth and welcome the newborn
When the final stage completes, labour triggers automatically. The Para gives birth at home (or heads to a bed) and the newborn is added to your household with a name you choose. The 'New Baby' moment is a natural save point — let the game auto-save or save manually right after.
- 6
Raise the baby through the life stages
The newborn starts as an Infant, then ages to Toddler and Child on the default aging speed. Each stage unlocks new interactions and skill-building objects. If you want to control the pace, adjust aging speed in the game options, or use the SETAGE / aging cheats to jump a stage for a Legacy run.
Troubleshooting
'Try for Baby' not showing up? Run this checklist
Nine times out of ten the option is hidden because one requirement is missing — the game doesn't tell you which. Work down these five checks in order; each one matches a real report from the community.
- 1
Both Paras are Young Adult or older
Teens and younger never get the interaction, and it stays hidden if either partner is a Teen. Check both ages in the household panel — aging pauses can leave one Para younger than they look.
- 2
The relationship reached Lovers and the children talk happened
Romance alone isn't enough. Build up to the Lovers label, then play the 'ask if they want to have children together' card from the 'discuss state of relationship' stack. Until that card resolves positively, the bed never offers Try for Baby.
- 3
Fertility settings are compatible
One Para must be set to 'can get pregnant' and the other to 'can get others pregnant' in Paramaker's Advanced Personality options. These are independent of gender but locked once the Para lives in a household — if neither can carry, adopt instead.
- 4
Both Paras are selected at the same time
This is the most common miss: with one Para selected, the bed only shows sleep options. Drag a selection box around both, or Shift-click both portraits, then click the bed.
- 5
You clicked a usable double bed
The interaction lives on beds the couple can actually use. A bed blocked by clutter, claimed by another household member, or a single bed won't offer it — try the master bed with clear space on both sides.
All five pass and it's still missing?
At that point you're likely in bug territory — a handful of EA saves report the option vanishing after a lot move or household merge. Save, exit to the main menu and reload; if it's still gone, travel the couple to another lot and back. As a last resort the console command GETPREGNANT starts the pregnancy directly and is achievement-safe. See all pregnancy and family cheats →

Common mistakes
These four issues are why a pregnancy stalls or a baby never arrives. Each has a simple fix.
'Try for Baby' never appears
The relationship isn't romantic enough yet, or one Para is a Teen. Both must be adults (Young Adult or older) with a committed romance relationship. Keep using flirt and romance interactions until the family options unlock.
Tried for a baby but nothing happened
Two things stall conception. First, fertility: one Para must be able to get pregnant and the other to get others pregnant (set in Paramaker, independent of gender). Second, it's a chance roll even when both qualify — try again after a few in-game hours, or take the pregnancy test to confirm. You can raise the odds in the Storyteller settings.
No crib when the baby arrives
Buy or build a crib during the pregnancy window. Without one, the newborn's needs are harder to manage. Use the Build Budget planner to make sure you can afford a nursery before labour.
Pregnancy seems frozen
A pregnancy only advances while you're actively playing that household, and trimester length is set in the Storyteller menu. Make sure you're controlling the pregnant Para's household, and check the pregnancy duration in Storyteller settings if the stages feel stuck.
Pregnancy & baby FAQ
The six questions players ask most about Paralives babies in Early Access.
- Can same-sex couples have a baby in Paralives?
- Yes. Paralives decouples fertility from gender — as long as one partner is set to 'can get pregnant' and the other to 'can get others pregnant' in Paramaker, a same-sex couple can conceive with 'Try for Baby'. If neither can carry, adopt at the hospital or pharmacy instead.
- Can you have twins in Paralives?
- Twins — and occasionally triplets — can occur as a chance outcome of a pregnancy, and you can raise the odds in the Storyteller settings. Visit any Healthcare Center during the pregnancy to find out how many babies to expect. They still count as a single pregnancy.
- How do you adopt a child in Paralives?
- Send an adult Para to the hospital or the pharmacy in town and choose 'Adopt baby'. The Para is busy for about two hours, then comes home with a child to name. Adoption skips the pregnancy entirely — handy when a couple can't conceive or you'd rather not run the romance storyline.
- How long does pregnancy last in Paralives?
- About three in-game days by default — three visible stages, each trimester roughly 24 hours. You can lengthen or shorten it in the Storyteller settings. Time only advances while you play that household.
- Can a single Para have a baby?
- A single Para can't use 'Try for Baby' alone, but they can adopt at the hospital or pharmacy, or start a romance with another Para first. Adoption is the fastest single-parent route.
- Is there a cheat to have a baby instantly?
- Yes. The console has GETPREGNANT to start a pregnancy instantly, GIVEBIRTH to jump straight to the birth, and MAKEBABIES to add a baby directly. Use pregnantstatus to check the time left, and SETAGE to age the newborn up. All are achievement-safe.
- Why do my Paras keep cancelling 'Try for Baby'?
- The interaction cancels when a need crashes (usually Sleep or Bladder), when another queued action takes priority, or when one partner is routed to a different floor and can't reach the bed. Clear both queues, top up needs, and re-run it with both Paras standing next to the bed.
- Is there maternity leave in Paralives?
- Yes — pregnant Paras get automatic time off around the birth and their job is safe while they're away; the exact leave length scales with the pregnancy settings in the Storyteller menu. Partners get a shorter leave window after the baby arrives.
- How do you get pregnant in Paralives?
- Only by using the 'Try for Baby' interaction on a double bed: get both adult Paras to the Lovers romance tier, select them together (drag a selection box or Shift-click both portraits), then click the bed and choose 'Try for Baby'. A pregnancy test on a toilet confirms it — the pregnancy then runs across three visible stages over about three in-game days.
- How do I make my Paras try for a baby?
- Both Paras need to be Young Adult or older, have reached the Lovers tier, and have compatible fertility settings (set in Paramaker under Advanced Personality). Select both at once, then click a double bed and pick 'Try for Baby'. If the option never shows up, work through the five checks in the 'Try for Baby not showing up' checklist above.
