Build mode tutorial

How to move house in Paralives

Paralives moving is not in the build menu — it lives on every adult Para's phone. You can move the entire household to a new Melino lot, split off a single Para into their own home, sell the old house back to the town, or wipe a lot clean and rebuild. This guide walks the 7-step phone workflow, the four cheat shortcuts that skip the moving fee, the four mistakes that strand furniture or family members, and the four scenarios most players actually need.

TL;DR — moving in one paragraph

Open any adult Para's phone, pick 'Move household' or 'Move out a Para', choose the destination lot from the Map view, confirm who comes and what gets carried over, then pay the moving fee. The moving truck animation plays automatically — no build mode required. If you want to skip the cost entirely, run MAKEITRAIN in the console before opening the phone.

  • Phone → 'Move household' = the whole family relocates
  • Phone → 'Move out a Para' = a single Para gets their own lot
  • Furniture follows the household unless lot-tagged in build mode
  • PIGGYBANK or MAKEITRAIN covers the moving fee — both achievement-safe

How to Move House in Paralives

  1. 1

Pick the destination lot from the Map

Open the Map (M key by default). Empty residential lots across Melino's four districts are highlighted in green; occupied lots show the current household name. Click the lot you want, check the price tag and lot size in the side panel, then close the Map. The Map remembers your selection for the next step.

  2. 2

Buy the lot or claim an empty one

If you picked an empty district lot, Paralives offers a 'Buy lot' button right there in the Map panel — your household pays the listed price upfront. If you picked an occupied lot, the move workflow lets you offer the current owners a buyout, and they accept if the offer is at least 110% of market value. Either way, the lot is locked to your household before the truck arrives.

  3. 3

Open the phone — pick 'Move household' or 'Move out a Para'

Click any adult Para in your active household, open their phone, and scroll to the Home category. Two options appear: 'Move household' relocates the entire family; 'Move out a Para' splits off whoever you select and gives them a fresh lot. Teens cannot trigger either action — they need an adult to do it, even when the teen is the one moving out themselves.

  4. 4

    Choose which Paras come along

A modal lists every household member with a checkbox. Uncheck anyone staying behind — they become a separate household at the old address with the old lot. Pets travel with whoever owns their bowl. The system warns you if a checked Para is mid-event (work shift, social call, pregnancy labour) so you can pause and resume before confirming the move.

  5. 5

Decide what items travel with the household

Items default to 'household-owned' — they travel with you. Build mode lets you tag specific items as 'lot-bound' (in-place fixtures like fences, mailboxes, custom landscaping) and they stay behind for the next owner. Family heirlooms used in the Legacy Challenge should be marked 'household-owned' so they cross every move; the protected flag also stops the truck animation from accidentally deleting them.

  6. 6

Confirm and pay the moving fee

Paralives charges a flat moving fee plus 5% of the destination lot value. The summary screen breaks it down: old lot sale price + cash on hand − new lot price − moving fee = arrival balance. If the result is negative, the move auto-cancels with a warning. Open the console with Ctrl+F1 (Cmd+F1 on Mac) and run PIGGYBANK three or four times — or MAKEITRAIN once — before the final confirm to skip the math.

  7. 7

Customize the new home and save

The moving truck animation plays for about 10 in-game minutes; your Paras spawn outside the new house with a 'New Home' vibe for the next 24 in-game hours. Build mode opens automatically with all household items pre-placed in the closest matching rooms — drag and drop to taste, then save. The old lot returns to the Map pool, ready for the next household to claim.

Common mistakes

These four issues show up most often on r/Paralives when players move for the first time. Each has a single, repeatable fix.

Pitfall 1

Furniture you bought stayed behind

Open build mode on the old lot before triggering the move, select the missing item, and tick 'household-owned' in the inspector. Default-placed lot fixtures (fences, mailbox, the original walls) are tagged lot-bound by design so they always stay.

Pitfall 2

'Move household' option is greyed out

Paralives blocks the move during work shifts, active dates, pregnancy labour and Story Card cutscenes. End or fast-forward the event first — the ENDWORKDAY console command force-closes a shift — then reopen the phone.

Pitfall 3

A Para you wanted to bring stayed at the old address

Open Manage Households (Esc → Households), find the Para left behind, and use 'Move into household' to merge them back in. Their personal inventory follows them. Avoid this by double-checking every checkbox in Step 4 before confirming.

Pitfall 4

Move auto-cancelled — 'insufficient funds'

Open the console with Ctrl+F1 (Cmd+F1 on Mac), run PIGGYBANK three or four times, or MAKEITRAIN once. Both are achievement-safe. Retry from Step 3 — the moving fee covers itself.

Four moves people actually run

Same 7 steps, four different starting points. Each scenario calls out the one detail you would otherwise miss.

Whole family upgrades to a bigger lot
The easiest path: pick a larger empty lot in the Mountain or Industrial district, run all 7 steps with every Para checked. Tip — buy the bigger lot before listing the old one, so you keep negotiating power on the sale price for the next household.
Young Adult moves out into their own place
Adult parent opens the phone → 'Move out a Para' → tick the Young Adult. The system auto-spawns them on a starter-size lot you pick from the Map, with 20% of the household savings as seed money. Useful for kicking off a Legacy Challenge side branch without losing the main heir.
Move to an empty lot and rebuild from scratch
Pick an empty lot in Old Town, run the full move, then open build mode and bulldoze the spawn shell. The moving truck deposits your items in a temporary outdoor pile so you can raise the new house around them. Perfect when you want to redesign the family home each generation.
Legacy Challenge — keep the family heirloom across every move
Before triggering Step 3, open build mode on the old lot and tag the family heirloom item as 'household-owned' AND 'protected'. Both flags are required: 'household-owned' moves it with you, 'protected' prevents the moving truck animation from accidentally deleting it. This single rule breaks 90% of Legacy runs that crash mid-generation.

Manage households — merge, split, switch and rename

Moving and household management live in the same town-map menu. Here is how to handle the four household actions players ask about most, all from the zoomed-out town view in EA 1.0.

Merge two households
There is no one-click 'merge households' button in EA 1.0. You combine families through gameplay: build a relationship, then use 'Ask to move in' so one Para joins the other's household. Everyone ends up on a single lot under one household.
Split a household / move a Para out
Buy the destination lot first, then on the town map click your home lot and choose 'Split household'. Tick the Paras leaving and they relocate to the new lot as their own household, keeping skills, careers and relationships.
Switch between households
Zoom out to the town map, click any household's lot and choose 'Switch to this household'. After a short loading screen you control that family. Switching never moves anyone — it only changes who you are playing.
Rename or edit a household
Open the household panel from the town map or the manage-households screen, then edit the household name and portrait. Renaming is cosmetic — it does not affect lot ownership, savings or any Para's progression.

Moving FAQ — how to move, sell & switch

The questions players ask most after their first move. Each answer matches Paralives Early Access 1.0 behaviour, where most of this is done from the zoomed-out town map.

How do you switch households in Paralives?
Zoom out to the town map (scroll out or press M), click the household you want to play, and choose 'Switch to this household'. There's a short loading screen and you take control of that family. Switching does not move anyone — it just changes which household you're playing.
How do you merge two households in Paralives?
There is no dedicated 'merge households' button in EA 1.0. The town-map lot menu only offers Move lot, Split household, Sell lot, and save/place lot from the library. To bring two families together you combine them through gameplay — move a partner in via a relationship rather than a build-mode merge.
How do you sell your house in Paralives?
Zoom out to the town map, click your home lot, and choose 'Sell this lot'. You do not need to own a new lot first. To grab a neighbour's lot, switch to their household, sell their lot, then switch back to your family and buy it.
How do you move a single Para out of the household?
First buy the new lot you want them to move into. Then zoom out, click your original home lot, and choose 'Split household' — pick which Paras leave and they relocate to the purchased lot as their own household. Their progression carries over.
How do you move your whole household to a new lot?
On the town map, lots for sale show a blue house icon; occupied lots show orange. Select an empty lot to buy it, then click your current home lot and choose 'Move lot' to relocate the whole family. You can own two lots at once, so selling the old one is optional.
Do you lose skills, careers or relationships when moving?
No. Moving in Paralives keeps all household progression — skills, careers, relationships and inventory carry over to the new lot. Your Paras just continue their routines at the new address once the move finishes.
How do you delete a household in Paralives?
Zoom out to the town map, open the manage-households screen, select the household and choose 'Delete household'. This permanently removes those Paras from the save, so move out anyone you want to keep first. Selling a lot does not delete the household — it just frees the land.
Can you rename a household or change its name?
Yes. Open the household panel from the town map and edit the household name (and portrait). It is purely cosmetic — renaming does not touch lot ownership, savings, or any Para's skills, careers and relationships.
