The short version
There is no foundation button. Draw a room with the Walls tool, then raise the floor with the blue arrow on the floor (or the Move Up One Floor control, top-right). That raised platform is your foundation — build the house on top of it. For porches and split rooms, turn a wall into a Separator from the three-dots menu so you can change floor height without a full wall in the way.
- No foundation tool — use Walls + platform height
- The blue floor arrow raises and lowers the platform
- Separator tool splits a room into two heights
- Stairs must snap to the raised platform edge
How to Raise a Foundation in Paralives
- 1
Enter build mode and draw a room
Press TAB or click the house icon in the bottom-left to open build mode. With the Walls tool, draw a closed room the shape you want your foundation footprint to be. Note that you cannot move a room around after placing it, so get the footprint right first.
- 2
Raise the floor to create the platform
Select the room's floor. A blue arrow appears in the middle of the floor — drag it up a few ticks to lift the platform off the ground. You can also use the Move Up or Down One Floor control in the top-right toolbar. This raised platform is what reads as a foundation; there is no separate foundation object.
- 3
Build the house on top
The raised platform now counts as the first floor. Add your exterior walls, doors, and windows on top of it exactly as normal. Remember the foundation is floor one, so anything you edit later stacks above it.
- 4
Hold Shift for half-grid precision
When drawing or nudging walls, hold Shift to snap to half-grid increments. This is what keeps a raised porch section lined up with the main house footprint instead of drifting half a tile off.
- 5
Split a level with the Separator tool
To give one part of a room a different floor height (a sunken lounge, a raised porch deck, a split-level entry), click the three-dots icon on the Walls tool and choose 'separator wall'. Trace the sub-area with the Separator — it divides the space without a solid wall — then raise or lower just that section's floor.
- 6
Add steps so Paras can get in
Once the floor is raised, a door alone leaves your Para stuck below it. Open the Stairs tool and drag a flight to the platform edge until it snaps into place, then adjust its width to match the doorway. See the stairs guide for the full walkthrough.
Common mistakes
These four trip up most players the first time they build a foundation.
Looking for a foundation tool that doesn't exist
Paralives has no dedicated foundation button. Build a room with the Walls tool and raise its floor with the blue arrow — that raised platform is the foundation. This is the single fact that unblocks most new builders.
Door placed, but the Para can't reach it
A raised platform with a door but no stairs strands your Para below. Place stairs and snap them to the platform edge, or trace the entry with the Separator tool first so the steps line up cleanly.
Tried to move the room after raising it
Rooms can't be repositioned once placed in this Early Access build. Get the footprint right before raising the floor, or bulldoze and redraw rather than fighting to drag it.
House looks sunken into a slope
The lot terrain is higher than the platform. Open Terrain Tools and use the Flatten brush on the build area first, or raise the platform higher than the tallest ground point so the whole house sits clear of the slope.
What raised platforms are for
Four builds that need the platform system done right.
- Raised porch
- Lift the front of the house on a platform and add a short flight of steps for a classic raised porch. This is the foundation method behind the porch tutorial.
- Split-level home
- Two sections at different floor heights joined by a few steps, set up with the Separator tool. The signature split-level layout, easy once platforms click.
- Building on a slope
- Flatten the build area with Terrain Tools, or raise the platform above the highest ground point, so the house sits level even on Melino's hillside lots.
- Sunken lounge
- Use the Separator tool to lower one section of a room below the rest for a sunken conversation pit, then ring it with a half-wall.
Can't raise the platform?
You drag the blue floor arrow and nothing moves, or the walls refuse to join up. Both come from the platform system needing the right conditions before it will lift. Here is the likely cause and how to fix it.
- It may need a supporting wall or structure first. A bare floor with nothing under it won't raise — draw the room with the Walls tool so the platform has a wall to lift from.
- Mismatched wall heights: you get 'cannot connect clusters of walls of different heights' when you try to join a raised section to a lower one. Raise both clusters to the same height, or bridge the gap with the Separator tool instead of a full wall.
- Furniture still pinned to the floor, or a stair connected to the edge, blocks the raise. Clear objects off the platform and detach any stairs, then try again.
- Terrain sitting higher than the platform blocks a raise. Flatten the build area with Terrain Tools first, or lift the platform above the tallest ground point.
Not yet verified: the exact conditions behind the 'cannot connect clusters of walls of different heights' error are not documented in an official source. The fix above is the likely cause, consistent with how the platform system behaves in Early Access.
Foundations & platforms FAQ
The questions players ask most when foundations and platforms won't behave — including the most-searched fix, "cannot raise platform".
- Why can't I raise the platform in Paralives?
- "Cannot raise platform" almost always means the room still has furniture or a wall feature pinned to the floor, or a stair/door is connected to it. Clear objects off the platform, detach any stairs, and make sure the room is fully enclosed — then the blue floor arrow (or Move Up One Floor control) will lift it. Terrain that sits higher than the platform also blocks the raise; flatten the build area first.
- How do I lower a platform or foundation?
- Select the raised floor and drag the blue arrow downward, or use the Move Down One Floor control in the top-right toolbar. A platform won't drop below the surrounding terrain — use Terrain Tools to dig the ground down first if you need a sunken level.
- Is there a foundation tool in Paralives?
- No. Unlike The Sims, Paralives has no dedicated foundation button. You draw a room with the Walls tool and raise its floor height — that raised platform is the foundation. This single fact unblocks most new builders.
- How do I build a platform for a porch or deck?
- Draw the porch footprint with the Walls tool, raise its floor a few ticks to match the house, then convert the dividing wall into a Separator (three-dots menu) so the heights connect without a solid wall. Add stairs snapped to the platform edge so Paras can step up.
- My stairs won't connect to the raised platform — what's wrong?
- Stairs must snap to the platform edge, not float beside it. Open the Stairs tool, drag a flight toward the raised edge until it highlights and clicks into place, then match its width to the doorway. If it still refuses, the platform height isn't a clean multiple of the step height — nudge the floor up or down one tick.
- What is the difference between a foundation and a platform in Paralives?
- Players say 'foundation' for the raised base under a whole house and 'platform' for any raised floor section inside a build. Mechanically they are the same thing — a floor placed at a custom height with the Walls tool. There is no separate foundation object in Early Access.
- How do I make a low platform, like a step or a stage?
- Place a floor with the Walls tool, select it, then drag the blue height arrow in small increments. One notch is roughly a step; two notches read as a stage or deck edge. Connect it to the main level with a single stair step so Paras can path up and down.
