TL;DR

What this skill does

Baby & Toddler lifestage skill — how little Paras learn to talk. Leveled through Together Cards played in a group with the baby or toddler, not through solo practice. No broader Knowledge domain, so nothing accelerates it except doing it.

Who it's for

Who should level Language first

  • Family players raising their first in-game baby and wondering what the Language bar actually does.
  • Legacy runners — early talkers convert to stronger school grades in generation planning.
  • Anyone stuck on 'how do toddler skills work' — this is one of only two, and the one worth prioritising.

Practice loop

How to level Language

Group an adult with the baby or toddler and play Together Cards — each completed card ticks the Language bar. Cards only appear when the little Para has no strong negative emotions, so keep needs green before you start. A toddler can also practise alone with the educational book 'Buki' (§20, kids section in Build Mode). Babies cap at level 4: the bar locks just before 5 and jumps on its own with the first language action after the age-up to Toddler.

Milestones

What you unlock at every tier

Skills cap at level 20. Highlights below mirror the Skin-system progression players reported during the first EA week. Treat them as expected rewards, not hard guarantees — patch 0.1.x may rebalance.

  1. Levels 1-4

First babbles. Cards with a single adult work; group cards may fizzle.

  2. Level 5

Consistent word attempts — toddler chat interactions stop failing and social need fills faster.

  3. Level 10

Fluent-for-age talker. Together Cards with multiple family members chain without breaks — the practical ceiling to aim for before age-up.

  4. Level 15

Baby/Toddler skills top out below this tier in the current build — treat 15+ as reserved. Language groundwork instead speeds up social skill gains after the Child age-up.

  5. Level 20

Not reachable as a toddler in EA. After age-up, the head start persists as faster social and school interactions rather than a visible Language bar.

Cheat path

Skip the grind with a console command

Open the console with Ctrl+F1 (or Cmd+F1 on Mac). Add one level with LEVELUPSKILL Language, or pin a target with SETSKILLLEVEL Language 10. Early Access ships no Steam achievements, so there is nothing to forfeit.

Examples
  • LEVELUPSKILL Language — adds one level instantly.
  • SETSKILLLEVEL Language 5 — sets to level 5.
  • SETSKILLLEVEL Language 20 — max out the skill.

Common mistakes

Three pitfalls that stall this skill

Pitfall 1

Solo-carding a tired toddler

Cards cancel when Sleep or Food dips. Top needs up first, then run the card stack — a green-needs toddler completes 3-4 cards in a row.

Pitfall 2

Only one adult ever talks

Together Cards in bigger groups tick faster. Rotate which household member runs the stack so care duty doesn't tank one adult's own needs.

Pitfall 3

Ignoring Language before age-up

The age-up doesn't backfill it. A silent toddler becomes a Child with slower social gains — run cards in the last toddler days even if the bar looks 'good enough'.

Adjacent skills to climb next

Skills in the same domain (or careers that double-dip) level faster together. Players reported domain-adjacent XP carrying about 1.2× into related skills.
