Fixes

Build mode not working? Fix it in six checks

'Build mode is broken' usually means one of four things: the game froze opening it, the tool you want doesn't exist yet, a placement bug, or a mod. This page splits the symptoms, walks the checks in order, and separates confirmed patch behaviour from community reports. Verified against EA 0.1.7c.

Quick answer

First figure out which 'not working' you have

Most build-mode reports are one of three different problems. If the game freezes the moment you open build mode, that's a crash-family issue — jump to the crash checklist. If a tool you know from The Sims seems missing (foundation button, room tool, auto floors), it genuinely doesn't exist in Paralives yet — the symptom cards below show what to use instead. If objects won't stay where you put them, that's the advanced-widget bug the studio is still tracking. The checks below are ordered to tell the three apart fast.

Identify your symptom

Four different failures, four different causes

'Build mode not working' covers distinct problems. Find yours first — the fix is different for each.

Symptom 1

The game freezes when you open build mode

A hard freeze the moment you switch into build mode is a crash-family symptom, not a build-tools problem — it's on the official known-issues tracker as reduced but not closed. Work through the crashing checklist: verify files, update drivers, disable overlays and mods, cap the framerate.

Symptom 2

A tool you expect isn't there

Coming from The Sims, players hunt for a foundation button, a room tool and automatic floors — none of these exist in the current build. Building means drawing walls, painting floor zones by hand and adding floors yourself. This is by design in Early Access, not a bug.

Symptom 3

Objects won't place, or snap back after reload

Items moved or rotated with the advanced transform widget can lose their position when the save reloads. Patch 0.1.7 made the widget 'much more reliable', but the issue is officially still open — after widget work, save and reload once to confirm the position stuck before building around it.

Symptom 4

Tools feel unresponsive — clicks or camera misbehave

On Mac, the studio has acknowledged trackpad click and camera-rotation issues and officially advises using a mouse. On any platform, check you're actually in build mode (Tab toggles live/build) and that a mod isn't hooking input — a quick no-mods restart answers both.

Checklist

Six checks, in the order that finds the cause fastest

Work down the list; stop at the first check that fails. Each check matches a real report or an official note.

  1. 1

    Update to the latest build

Build-mode reliability improves almost every patch: 0.1.2 shipped memory-leak fixes, and 0.1.7 made the advanced transform widget 'much more reliable and less prone to breaking positions'. Confirm you're on 0.1.7c in Steam before debugging anything else.

  2. 2

Confirm you're actually in build mode

Tab toggles between live and build mode, and some tools only exist on one side — if clicking does nothing, check the mode indicator first; B selects the wall tool and O opens the catalogue.

  3. 3

    Restart with no mods

A Workshop mod can break placement or freeze the game when build mode opens. Disable all mods, restart, reproduce; if it's stable, re-enable in halves to find the culprit — the same bisect the studio recommends.

  4. 4

    Learn the real hotkeys

Several 'tool doesn't respond' reports are muscle memory from other games. The actual bindings are in the table below — grid toggle, snap override and the advanced widget all have keys, and none of them are the ones Sims players guess.

  5. 5

On Mac: use a mouse, not the trackpad

Trackpad click and camera-rotation issues are officially acknowledged on Mac, and the studio's advice is to play with a mouse. If build tools feel broken only on a MacBook trackpad, this is the first thing to rule out.

  6. 6

Verify files and back up before big edits

Steam → Paralives → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity fixes corrupted installs. Before a large rebuild, duplicate the save from the Load Game menu so a bad session never costs the house.

Patch history

What the recent patches actually changed

Build mode has gotten steadier with nearly every update — here is what really changed, read from the official notes.

  1. 0.1.2

Memory-leak fixes to reduce crashes and a loading screen up to 20% faster. The same notes opened the known-issues tracker that still lists crashes/freezes as improved but not closed.

  2. 0.1.4

A 'Loading mods…' screen now shows at launch instead of a silent freeze — if the game used to hang with no message before you ever reached build mode, this is what changed.

  3. 0.1.7 (10 Aug 2026)

The advanced transform widget was made 'much more reliable and less prone to breaking positions' — the misplaced-objects bug is improved, not officially closed.

Known bugs

Every check passes and it's still broken?

Then you're in tracked-bug territory. These are the officially acknowledged cases that touch build mode.

Advanced-widget items lose their position

Objects moved or rotated with the advanced transform widget may not stay put after a reload. On the official tracker since 0.1.2, improved in 0.1.7, not closed. After widget work, save and reload once to confirm positions stuck before you build around them.

Crashes and freezes (including opening build mode)

Crash and freeze reports have dropped with every patch since 0.1.2 but still occur; the studio points at the minimum requirements. Our crashing guide walks the remaining causes in order.

Mac trackpad input

Click and camera-rotation problems with the Mac trackpad were acknowledged at launch with the official advice to use a mouse; the tracker hasn't mentioned it since, so current status is unreadable.

Tools that don't exist yet

No foundation tool, no room tool, no automatic floors or basement — the studio's own porch-building advice is to fake a foundation with walls and floor paint. These are roadmap items, not bugs.

Save-safe workarounds, in order

  1. 1Save, exit to the main menu and reload the lot — this clears most one-off tool glitches.
  2. 2Tab out to live mode and back into build mode, then re-select the tool with its hotkey.
  3. 3Disable all mods, restart, and re-enable in halves until the breakage returns.
  4. 4After advanced-widget placement, save and reload once to confirm the position stuck before continuing.
  5. 5If a freeze never recovers, force-quit — since 0.1.5 the Load Game menu keeps the 3 last autosaves, so a freeze rarely costs more than a few minutes.

What nobody has officially documented

Rather than guess, we list what no official source states. Competing sites invent numbers for these; we won't.

  • Whether any patch note has ever acknowledged a build-mode-only freeze separately from the general crashes/freezes entry — we found none.
  • The exact conditions that still break advanced-widget positions after 0.1.7.
  • Whether Mac trackpad input was quietly fixed after 0.1.2 — the tracker never mentioned it again.
  • Any official timeline for a foundation tool, room tool or basements — the roadmap lists themes, not dates.

Build mode FAQ

Why is Paralives build mode not working?
Usually one of four causes: the game froze when build mode opened (a crash-family issue), the tool you're looking for doesn't exist in the current build, the advanced-widget position bug, or a mod breaking placement. The six checks above identify yours in order.
Is there a room tool in Paralives?
No. The current build has no room tool, foundation button or automatic floors — you draw walls, paint floor zones and add floors by hand. That's by design in Early Access, not something broken on your install.
Why do my objects move back after I reload the save?
That's the officially tracked advanced-widget bug: items positioned with the transform widget can lose their placement on reload. Patch 0.1.7 made it 'much more reliable' but the issue is still open — save and reload once after widget work to confirm positions stuck.
Why does Paralives freeze when I open build mode?
A hard freeze on entering build mode belongs to the crashes/freezes issue the studio has reduced with every patch since 0.1.2. Update first, then verify files, disable overlays and mods, and cap the framerate at 60 fps — the crashing checklist covers each step.
What are the build mode controls in Paralives?
Tab toggles build/live mode, B is the wall tool, O opens the catalogue, G toggles the grid, hold Alt to ignore snapping, X rotates 90°, and the numpad * opens the advanced transform widget. The table above has the full verified list.
Does build mode work on Mac?
Yes, but the studio acknowledged trackpad click and camera-rotation issues at launch and officially advises using a mouse. If tools feel unresponsive only on the trackpad, that's the known cause — the tracker hasn't updated its status since 0.1.2.
